Understanding Eye Control
We know that mental toughness is easy to see in the time between points and harder to see in the time during the point. Many players struggle with how to manage their “between point” time. When you consider that the time between points usually represents up to 80% of the entire time of the match, it is easy to see that learning skills for managing your between point time is very important.
The time between points is a tug of war for many players. Their minds are racing about the last point, what they should do on the next point, and they resort to battling with themselves about their mistakes.
One great way to manage your between point to time is to get control of your eyes. You see, up to 85% of the thoughts that enter our minds come through what we see with our eyes. That is why you see so many tour players often looking only at their strings between points. While some of the reason is to realign their strings, I think the bigger reason is because they know the danger of letting their eyes wander around and thus causing them to lose focus.
This simple concept is often overlooked by many players and is a major cause of poor performance. Next time you watch a pro match, pay attention to where their eyes are going between points.
