Overhead Strategy
In high level doubles there are many tactics that are being used that are not necessarily obvious to the people watching. Many of these are simply tactics that revolve around high percentage tennis and give a team their best chance to win a point.
Club players are especially in need of learning these subtle tactics as they are the ones that could benefit the most.
One simple example is using what I call using advanced overhead strategy. Specifically, when one partner is back hitting the overhead, the other partner should release and move toward the net so they can put away an easy returns that might come back. But that is only part of the strategy.
To increase the chances that the player that releases the net (who is in the strongest position) gets to play the ball, the partner hitting the overhead should almost always hit it cross-court. This will ensure that the ball coming back on the next shot will be coming from the corner where the net partner is already located. Hitting the same overhead down the line, make the net person far less likely to be able to make a play in the next shot.
While this is a great rule of thumb, there are exceptions. If the overhead is an easy sitter, then it can just put away for a winner.
Follow this simple yet subtle tactic and you will see how your doubles results improve.
