Bad Execution vs. Bad Strategy
Many players have a difficult time sticking to a correct strategy because they do not understand the difference between bad execution and bad strategy.
Tennis is filled with examples of players that actually use the correct strategy or tactic, but in the end simply make an execution error and lose the point. The danger arises when these players incorrectly blame or start doubting the “strategy” instead of the “execution.” The end result is inexperienced players will often abandon the correct strategy and lessen their chances for success.
An example of this played out on the court the other day with one of our junior players. He was playing a singles point and ended up hitting a successful lob over the head of his net rushing opponent. As the opponent ran back in a desperate attempt to reach the lob, I was encouraged to see that my player had followed his lob to the net and was ready to finish the point off. The problem was that when the opponent threw up his weak lob, my player ended up missing a fairly easy overhead. A few minutes later when the same player hit another successful lob, I noticed that he stayed back. When I asked him whey he did not follow the lob to the net, has said “because that doesn’t work.” He was of course referring to the point he had lost when he approached the net last time.
This is a common scenario amongst players at all levels. At the end of the day if a player can not distinguish the difference between bad execution and bad strategy, they will the risk of playing tactically unsound tennis. As coaches, this is one of the most important things to help our player understand..
