David W. Smith
David Smith grew up under the tutelage of his father the late Bruce
Smith, 1983 California Coach of the Year and runner-up National Coach of
the Year. Dave played tennis in the tennis-rich area of Southern
California where he competed regularly with many of the worlds top
players.
After high school, (where he set most every school tennis record) Dave
went on to play number one singles for Rancho Santiago Community College
and California State University, Fullerton while gaining a Bachelor’s
degree in Physical Education and Science. Following college, Dave joined
his father at La Quinta High School in the Huntington Beach area of
Southern California where the two Smiths led that school’s tennis program
to over 700 league match wins against only 8 loses.
In 1991, Dave moved with his wife, Dr. Kerri Smith to Phoenix, Arizona
and served as the assistant tennis professional at the 5-Star rated Wigwam
Resort in Litchfield Park. In 1997, after moving to St. George Utah, a
growing community 100 miles north of Las Vegas, Dave became the head
tennis professional at the Green Valley Spa and Tennis Resort.
Currently, Dave directs tennis at the St. George Tennis Academy and
teaches over 75 junior players including several top nationally ranked
juniors. Dave is writing a book called “Tennis Mastery” which identifies
why so many tennis players top-out at the 3.0 or 3.5 levels. Tennis
Mastery is due out at the beginning of 2003. Dave is a USPTA Certified
