As my shot is traveling back towards my opponent I really need
to make progress towards the middle of the court. If I sidestep
towards the middle of the court I'll be moving in a very balanced
manner and able to change directions, but I probably am not going
to get very far. Sidestepping is not the quickest way to move.
The answer is getting at least one good crossover step to help
get me back to the middle. With a good crossover step, I'll
not only be moving a lot quicker but I'll still be able to keep
my shoulders square to the net and keep a good view of the action
in front of me. All the while I'll be prepared to hit a split
step and get balanced at the precise moment I need to: when my
opponent makes contact with the ball.
