2. Crossover Step

As my shot is traveling back towards my opponent I really need to make progress towards the middle of the court. If I sidestep towards the middle of the court I'll be moving in a very balanced manner and able to change directions, but I probably am not going to get very far. Sidestepping is not the quickest way to move. The answer is getting at least one good crossover step to help get me back to the middle. With a good crossover step, I'll not only be moving a lot quicker but I'll still be able to keep my shoulders square to the net and keep a good view of the action in front of me. All the while I'll be prepared to hit a split step and get balanced at the precise moment I need to: when my opponent makes contact with the ball.
