The Split Step, Backhand
by Jim McLennan
Split Step Elements
- Excellent posture at the split--the knees are bent, the
back is straight, the head is up.
- Wide split of the legs--usually the wider the better
as this lowers your center of gravity and enables you to move laterally
more quickly and with more control.
- The first step after the split is always under and never
out or across. On the backhand, the left foot moves slightly right and
then sharply pushes the subsequent crossover step.
- The shoulders turn and the strings of the racquet face
the ball.
- The momentum continues towards the ball despite the cut.
