Opening the rally with the crosscourt backhands

As the point unfolds, Greg's opponent has played his initial shot to Greg's backhand side. At this point there is no need for Greg to run around the backhand. He wants to get into the rally, get a feel for the opponent, and similarly play his reply to his opponent's backhand side. You can get a real sense for this play and counterplay by watching Sampras and Agassi trade backhand crosscourts. Each one waits for a ball that he can pounce on and run around and hit a big forehand.

Notice Greg has immediately turned his shoulders to the side, hands up, elbows bent, and racquet away from the body. By the third frame he is fully coiled and waiting to step into the shot. His plan is to hit the ball high and deep crosscourt, and his positioning in this third frame is clearly behind the ball, ready to swing up and through the ball.
