Rule of the Week Question
In doubles, my opponent's net partner called my serve out and then changed
her mind and said that it was good. Her partner played the ball. I continued
to play and we won the point. My question is, should I replay the point?
My opponent thought that I should.
Answer
The short answer on this is your opponent is right in this instance. The
general rule is that if a player mistakenly calls a ball "out"
and then realizes that it was good, the point shall be replayed if the player
returned the ball successfully to the other court (which was your scenario).
If the ball is not successfully returned, the team/player making the mistake
(calling a good ball out) loses that point. If a mistaken call is on the
second serve, the server is entitled to two serves.
