Backhand Volley
by
John Yandell

- Good Ready Position. Note that the tip of the racket
is even with the top of the head, and the elbows are relaxed
and slightly bent. The feet are a little wider than shoulder
width and the knees are flexed.
- Turn Position. This is the open "U" hitting
arm position at the completion of the preparation or turn. Note
the key checkpoints: The shoulders are almost perpendicular,
or 90 degrees to the net. The forearm is parallel to the court
and racket and the upper arm are both at a 45 degree angle to
the court. There has been no independent arm motion.
- Contact Position. The player has stepped forward into
the line of the shot with the right foot. The "U" formed
by the hitting arm and racket has moved forward to the ball in
the same position as the turn.
- Finish Position: The finish on the backhand volley,
like the forehand volley, is extremely compact. The arm and racket
have continued to move in the "U" position do the racket
so that they travel slightly past the contact point. The checkpoint
is that the butt of the racket points just past the edge of the
right front leg. This is a magic key for a simple, powerful,
consistent backhand volley.
