A Few Questions for
Lindsay Davenport

On October 12, 1988. Lindsey Davenport became the first American-born player to reach number one since Chris Evert more than ten years earlier. Now, more mature and physically fit and with two grand slams under her belt, she seems on the verge of once again capturing the top spot. Over a period of days at the US Open, we had a chance to get Lindsay's perspective on her incredible run.

Q. For people who don't know tennis, they still know what Wimbledon is. Did you get more of a reaction, after winning Wimbledon then say when you won the US Open?
Lindsay Davenport: Yeah. I thought I got a much bigger - yeah. I think just the way people in the media covered it, and the way that more people knew about it, you know. And for some reason, like people that don't know tennis, "oh, she's the one that won Wimbledon." You hear people say that sometimes when you walk by. You never hear "that's the US Open" - you hear "isn't that the tennis player, she's the one that won Wimbledon" or something. I felt it was a much bigger deal for everybody else. For me, you know, it's almost the same, kind of, but it's treated differently.

Q. Which title do you treasure more, the US Open or Wimbledon?
Lindsay Davenport: It's so hard to say. I mean, even the Olympics, all three of those titles, are very special to me. In some cases, US Open probably because it was the first one. To be able to win it in the States meant a lot. On the other hand, Wimbledon, I never thought I'd win there. I struggled so many years on grass. Neither one is necessarily more special than the other, but are both cherished a lot.

Q. There are players who can get to the quarters or semis of a Grand Slam, something clicks into their brain, they can't get any farther. You finally achieved your first Grand Slam win. Can you define what it is that takes you over the last plateau?
