Wimbledon Notebook

Jennifer Capriati lost her chance to win Wimbledon and the Grand Slam this year. She still could have something to cheer about at the end of the weekend.

After slumping to as low as No. 267 in the world rankings, the 25-year-old American will ascend to a career high when the updated list is released Monday.

And she could be up as high as No. 2, behind Martina Hingis.

For that to happen, defending champion Venus Williams would have to lose to Justine Henin in Saturday's Wimbledon final.

Even if Williams wins, though, Capriati will still rise to a career-high ranking of No. 3.

Capriati lost to Henin in the semifinals here.

Lindsay Davenport, who lost to Williams in the semifinals, will drop from No. 3 to No. 4 whatever happens in the final.

Hollywood Hits Wimbledon

Jack Nicholson was at Wimbledon on Friday with Lara Flynn Boyle.

Nicholson wandered around the All England Club before going into Centre Court to watch Pat Rafter's five-set victory over Andre Agassi in the semifinals.

Nicholson and Boyle did some shopping and carried bags full of Wimbledon merchandise.

Nicholson wore a beige suit, powder blue polo shirt and his trademark sunglasses and smiled broadly for photographers. Boyle wore a white blouse, white trousers, black jacket and sunglasses.

Belgium Loves Tennis

Suddenly, Belgium is infatuated with tennis.

First, Kim Clijsters reached the French Open final last month. Now 19-year-old Justine Henin is in Saturday's Wimbledon final against Venus Williams. No Belgian has ever won a Grand Slam event.

Belgium's Crown Prince Philippe and his pregnant wife, Princess Mathilde, are expected to be in the Royal Box on Saturday to root for Henin. The royal couple, avid tennis fans, also attended the French Open final.

Henin, a semifinalist in Paris, and Clijsters were both invited to the Royal Palace and feted by King Albert II and Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt after the French Open.

While Belgian's French-language TV network RTBF repeatedly replayed Henin's Wimbledon semifinal victory over Jennifer Capriati, the country's newspapers were full of information on the match.

``And Now Venus,'' headlined Het Nieuwsblad.

``In Heaven beside Venus,'' the Gazet Van Antwerpen said.

Henin's hometown of Marloie plans to put a large TV screen in the town square for Saturday's final.

There could be another reason to cheer, too.

Clijsters and partner Ai Sugiyama of Japan beat Virginia Ruano Pascual and Paola Suarez 6-4, 6-4 to reach Sunday's doubles final.

Men's Doubles

The U.S. duo of Donald Johnson and Jared Palmer will play Jiri Novak and David Rikl of the Czech Republic in the men's doubles final.

Johnson and Palmer, who have been playing together for just four months, are trying to become the first all-U.S. team to win the men's doubles title at Wimbledon since Rick Leach and Jim Pugh in 1990.

Novak and Rikl are the fourth all-Czech pairing to play in a Grand Slam doubles final in the Open era, and the first at Wimbledon. None of the previous three pairs won.

At the French Open last month, Czechs Petr Pala and Pavel Vizner lost to Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes in the final.
