Go Slow

Australian Open organizers have admitted they were surprised by the speed of the Melbourne Park courts for the season-opening Grand Slam and promised to try to decrease the speed of the courts next year. Following repeated complaints from players that the fast-paced courts favored big servers and reduced the ability to rally, Australian Open chief executive Paul McNamee said a review of the facilities had been conducted. Court maintainers "had never really produced a quick court for us and we weren't looking that way or thinking that was going to happen," McNamee told the Herald Sun newspaper of Melbourne. The courts are "certainly quicker than previous years, that's well documented. It certainly won't be quicker" next year. "You would expect we'll be backing it off a bit."

Sampras, a winner of 12 Grand Slam titles, was among the players critical of the court surface, saying the surface and the balls had contributed to the fastest conditions he ever faced.

Final Seeds

No. 1 Agassi versus No. 2 Yevgeny Kafelnikov. No. 1 Martina Hingis versus No. 2 Lindsay Davenport. The last time the top two seeds made it to the finals in both men's and women's singles of the Australian Open was in 1993. In that year, No. 1 Courier beat No. 2 Stefan Edberg, and top-seeded Monica Seles defeated No. 2 Steffi Graf. It's only the fourth time in the Open era that the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds have advanced to the final in both events.

Form Reversal

Women's doubles champions Rennae Stubbs of Australia and Lisa Raymond of the United States say they're best friends. Obviously they accept the good and the bad from each other. After edging three-time doubles titlist Martina Hingis and her partner Mary Pierce in three sets, Stubbs and Raymond said it was sweet revenge. "Lisa lost in the final to her three years ago with Lindsay (Davenport) and then we've lost to her twice in a row, so Lisa's been the queen of losers to Martina," said Stubbs. "I lost to her one year, I think I started it off," said Raymond. The pair combined to win five doubles titles last year, but the Australian Open championship was their first Grand Slam success.

Kafelnikov Crushes Norman in 'Other' Semifinal

Just 90 minutes after Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Magnus Norman stepped onto Rod Laver Arena for the "other" semifinal, the match was over. In terms of excitement and drama, it was a match that lived down to expectations. But then, few matches could have lived up to the Andre Agassi- Pete Sampras epic that preceded it the day before. Without much hype or fanfare, second-seeded Kafelnikov advanced to the Australian Open final with an easy 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 drubbing of the 12th- seeded Swede. Norman made 41 errors as the Russian, now one match away from back-to-back titles here, gave Norman a clinic in precision all-court play. Kafelnikov committed only 18 unforced errors. The win by the defending champion set up a championship match against top-seeded Agassi, who outlasted No. 3 Sampras, 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (7-0), 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 in the first semifinal Thursday.

Andre Can't Wait for Davis Cup

After edging Pete Sampras in a five-set match in the Australian Open semifinals, Andre Agassi said he was looking forward to teaming with his countryman in the Davis Cup opener next week. But his prospects of joining Sampras on the Davis Cup team against Zimbabwe were erased Friday when the third-ranked Sampras withdrew from the squad due after injuring his hip in the semifinal. The top-seeded Agassi is already thinking about the U.S. vs. Zimbabwe Davis Cup clash starting Feb. 4 in Harare. "I feel you have to prove you are No. 1 every time you are on a tennis court. ... I want to do it next week in Zimbabwe and continue it," he said. Sampras has a muscle tear injury to his hip flexor and is expected to be sidelined 3-to-4 weeks. He said if he's fit, he'll make himself available for the second round of the Davis Cup in April.

Outside in

Martina Hingis says using the retractable roof at Melbourne Park is ideal for a Grand Slam tournament and she believes that Wimbledon and Roland Garros should consider installing a similar feature over their main stadiums. Conditions in Melbourne have been less than ideal for tennis, with continual rain and strong winds over the last two weeks. In other years, the temperature has exceeded 104 degrees and players have suffered heat exhaustion. "I think it's very good to have these different options if it rains because the weather has been just terrible here," this week, Hingis said.

Having a roof "it's great, because you don't have to wait around forever and just like Wimbledon sometimes or the French Open ... it always happens that during those two weeks, one or two days it rains and it's not much fun." With the retractable roof on center court, "you always know you get to play," she added.

Short Sets

The WTA reportedly wants to add excitement to the women's game by experimenting with more but shorter sets. The men will decide in March if they want to try something similar. The proposal is to play best-of-five sets in all matches instead of the current best-of-three format. Sets would be won with five games, tiebreaks would be shorter, and the fifth set would be restricted to a tiebreak or the first to reach 10 points. WTA officials will put the suggestion to the rules committee of the International Tennis Federation in the next few months, the Daily Telegraph of London reported. One goal of the proposal is to achieve consistency in the length of matches, making them more television-friendly. Tennis matches are often difficult for commercial programs to fit into program schedules.

Home Advantage

Hingis said she virtually owns center court at Melbourne Park after winning three successive Australian Open titles. And Lindsay Davenport, her rival in Saturday's women's final, is well aware of it. "It's going to be tough, Martina pretty much owns this court and has won some ridiculous number like 44, 45 matches in singles and doubles," she said. "I'm definitely the underdog going into the final." Neither player has dropped a set en route to the final, and Hingis said she's looking forward to a "dream final." Said the top-ranked Swiss player: "I always play on center court, this is my -- I feel homey here. It has been my court for the last three years. I intend to keep going one more."

Ticketless

About 280 disgruntled tennis fans were considering legal action after a ticketing error meant they were not entitled to the tickets they'd purchased for the Sampras-Agassi semifinal. Agassi beat Sampras 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (7-0), 7-6 (7-5), 6-1. The fans were among a group of 500, including American and German tourists, who purchased ticket, airfare and accommodation packages through Qantas Holidays for the Australian Open.

The Australian airline scraped together 220 tickets, mainly from sponsors and corporate areas, and issued those to people in the order in which they had booked the packages. The others were offered $650 or a free return airfare on any of its main domestic routes. The fans were also invited to watch the match on big screens in the ballroom of a nearby hotel. A high-profile Melbourne law firm is investigating the compensation on behalf of several fans.

Some fans threatened a sit-in between day and evening sessions, but tournament organizers said there were no problems involving the fans and the Melbourne Park arena was cleared between sessions.

Comeback Credit

Hingis said she should get some of the credit for Jennifer Capriati's strong showing at the Australian Open. The two players practice together in Saddlebrook, Fla., where Capriati lives. Hingis has a home nearby. "We practice together in Saddlebrook," Hingis said with a smile. "I think I lifted up her motivation a little bit."
