Davenport Back! Dokic and Seles Get Through
Lindsay Davenport made an impressive return to the WTA tour knocking
off Stanford Grad, Anne Kremer 6-3 6-0 to reach the quarterfinals of the
Bank of the West Classic. Though Davenport insists she'll need several
weeks to get back in top shape after nine months off the tour following
knee surgery, her opponents, including Kremer suspect she's already there.
"She looked great," Kremer said. "It's hard to play when somebody is
overpowering you all the time. I thought she was pretty close to her top
level."
After losing her serve early, Davenport roared back routinely cracking
serves of over 105 mph.. She won 16 straight points to open the second set
and take control of the match.
"I was really excited before I got out there," Davenport said. "Win or
lose, it was huge progress to get back on the court. It was a great
evening -- one of the best I've had in a long time."
Davenport received a special injury exemption to take the second
seeding in the Bank of the West, where she won in 1998 and 1999.
Other Matches
Jelena Dokic recovered from a shaky start to beat former doubles
partner Conchita Martinez 1-6 6-0 6-1 at Stanford. Dokic dropped the first
set in just fifteen minutes winning only one game before storming back to
take twelve of the next thirteen to close out the match.
"I didn't run in the first set," Dokic said. "I wasn't in the match at
all."
Dokic beat Martinez at Sarasota, Hamburg, and Roland Garros, and now
tacks on a victory at the Bank of the West.
In windy conditions, Monica Seles, fought through an erratic serve and
a tenacious opponent, Tamarine Tanasugarn, a Thai, whose court coverage
caused problems for her Seles..
"It was a very tough match in tough conditions for me," Seles said.
"I'm happy I started playing better in the third set, but it really could
have gone either way."
