Greenwald Is Over the HillHow dare anyone say Jeff Greenwald is over the hill. but the fact is, he was exactly that during July - over the hill between San Jose and Santa Cruz, beating just about any player in his path down in the Monterey Bay area.
The San Francisco sports psychologist had his mind in order in mid-July when he wrapped up the singles title at the $1,000 Granite Construction Wild-card Championships, the annual event at Seascape Sports Club that serves as a preliminary event for the annual $50,000 Safeway Challenger Greenwald! the top seed in the Fridays-only tournament that started months ago, defeated tournament director Rick Kepler in the semis before downing No.2 Casey Loule of Sunnyvale 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 for top honors in the NorCal Open division event. Greenwald then earned the right to play in the qualifying tournament for the Safeway. "I wouldn't say he's at his peak," said Kepler, 'But he's pulling out wins. Somebody told me that he's not all that confident right now and he's not playing a whole bunch. He's had closer matches than he'd like. But he's beating the guys he should, and he's starting to get that confidence back." A few weeks later, Greenwald topped Louie again for the Monterey Bay Championships title on July 30. Greenwald made this one a quick kill: 6-2,6-1. He beat Scott Pfeiffer of San Francisco in the semis almost as handily. Louie topped Frank Martineau, also of The City 6 , 7-6(4) in the semis.
