Sybase Open presented by Pacific Bell has a Q&A with Mark Philippoussis Question: What has it meant to your career to win the Sybase Open in 1999, and then defend your title in 2000? Philippoussis: It was the first time that I had defended a title and the feeling was great! The Sybase Open will always be a special place for me - I have a lot of confidence when I play there and always enjoy great support. Question: How has your success in San Jose affected your career? Philippoussis: It gives me confidence knowing that I have defended the title. This also shows me that I can do it again whenever I play. Question: For you, what is the toughest part of playing on the ATP Tour? Philippoussis: I miss my home and family, also the fact that there is no "off-season" like in basketball or baseball. The tennis season is year round - sometimes it becomes too much and you can lose your motivation. Question: Up to this point, what has been the highest moment of your career? The lowest moment? Philippoussis: The highest: Winning my singles match in Nice, which gave Australia the 1999 Davis Cup. The lowest: For me there has been more than one. Question: At what point does a player's status change from an "up and comer" to an Elite star? Philippoussis: I think when he/she starts getting the respect of other players who know that every time he/she steps on the court it will be a tough match. Question: What other sports do you enjoy playing or watching? Philippoussis: Super bike racing, surfing, motor cross, super sport racing. Question: What does the "Alexander the Great" tattoo on your right arm signify? Philippoussis: A Greek conqueror who overcame all challenges - even when the odds were against him. |
