Capriati Advances in Seat Open
Jennifer Capriati scored a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Croatian Jelena
Kostanic Wednesday in the opening round of the SEAT Open tournament. The
third-seeded American is 16th in the world rankings.
Fourth-seeded Patty Schnyder of Switzerland easily defeated Alexandra
Fusai of France 6-1, 6-1, to advance to the quarterfinals. German Barbara
Rittner upset eighth seed
Belgian Justine Henin 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, while sixth seed Anne-Gaelle Sidot of
France defeated Bulgarian Lumbera Bacheva, 6-3, 6-1.
Three More Spaniards Advance
Spaniards Galo Blanco, Juan Balcells and Alberto Martin scored
first-round victories Wednesday in the Palmero ATP tournament, giving
Spain seven players in the second round. Blanco beat Sebastian Prieto of
Argentina 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5). Juan Balcells breezed by fellow Spaniard
Alberto Berasategui 6-1, 6-2, while Martin defeated Brazilian
Fernando
Meligeni 6-3, 6-3. Sergi Bruguera, Francisco Clavet, David
Sanchez and Alex Calatrava of Spain advanced on Tuesday.
Four Spanish Players Advance at Palermo; Moya Withdraws
Spain's Sergi Bruguera outlasted countryman Emilio Alvarez in three
sets Tuesday to advance to the second round of the ATP tournament with
three other Spaniards. Bruguera lost the opening set, but came on to win
5-7, 6-3, 6-4.
Other Spanish winners were Francisco Clavet, David Sanchez,
Alex Calatrava, while No. 3 seed Carlos Moya withdrew for personal
reasons. Clavet ousted Russian Mikhail Youzhny 6-2, 6-4; Sanchez defeated
Daniel Elsner of Germany 6-3, 6-1 and Calatrava beat Clemens Trimmel of
Austria 6-2, 6-3. Other first-round winners included Marino Puerta of
Argentina and Olivier Rochus of Belgium.
