Revolutionary Racquet Testing - The 2002 Models

TennisONE continues its revolutionary way for players to evaluate the bewildering number of racquets and exotic design features in the tennis market. Racquet Research goes beyond the claims of manufacturers, or even the subjective play test evaluations found in magazines, because it is based on actual scientific measurements.

TennisONE contributor Wilmot McCutchen, author of the acclaimed site Racquet Research, has compiled a database of hundreds of frames from published measurements and ranked them based on fiver factors: Efficiency, Wrist Safety, Elbow Safety, Shoulder Safety, and DexterityRacquets were then ranked according to their composite score. Unlike virtually every other racquet testing procedure, these factors are based on real measurements of the physical characteristics of the frames.

The measurements are weight, balance, swingweight, and length supplied by published data from the USRSA. Not only will Racquet Research provide you with the most detailed information available, it offers the opportunity to dig deeper and understand the science behind racquet testing procedures, presented in English for the average player.

Be forewarned will challenge many of your conceptions about racquet design. At TennisONE we pride ourselves on bringing our readers innovative viewpoints from the most creative thinkers in tennis. The Racquet Research distinctive perspective may cause you to reevaluate much of the latest advanced racquet technology, particularly the trend to ultra light, head heavy racquets.

It has been estimated that half of all players over 30 suffer from tennis elbow. So the consequences of a bad racquet choice are worse than the waste of just $300. But how can a player make an informed choice? Racquet ads are not very informative, and often deliberately misleading. Play tests depend on the personal opinions of testers, and like all subjective tests are prone toward personal preferences. TennisONE's has put together a comprehensive objective performance criteria using quantifiable and meaningful terms in place of hype and subjective play tests. As always, the TennisONE team will try to provide the best available current information.

Quantifiable Evaluation Criteria:

Racquet Rankings

The results of computations under the foregoing ten evaluation criteria have been grouped under headings the average player can understand. Five macro criteria comprise the relevant performance criteria. These are Efficiency, Wrist Safety, Elbow Safety, Shoulder Safety, and Dexterity. The rankings of these five macro criteria were added, and the sums sorted for an overall rank. Because Elbow Safety is a dominant concern, or should be anyway, it was weighted 1.5 times each of the others, which were weighted equally.

What the Pros Think

In addition to the objective evaluations above, TennisONE's professional staff will conduct it's own more subjective tests based on traditional evaluations like Power, Control, Maneuverability, Stability, and Stiffness. Racquets in blue type and underlined have been play tested. Click on them to find out what the pros think.
