David W. Smith
David Smith has taught tennis for 30 years in three states. In California, he competed regularly with many of the world's top players while setting most every high school tennis record at Garden Grove High School in Southern California. After playing number one singles and doubles for Rancho Santiago Community College and for California State University Fullerton, Dave joined his father, nationally recognized coach Bruce Smith at La Quinta high school in Westminster California. There, the two Smiths created a true tennis dynasty, one that lasted 22 years (until Dave moved to Arizona in 1991) and consisted of over 760-team league wins against only 9 losses. In Arizona, Dave's coaching record was nearly as amazing as he amassed a win-loss record of over 300 team wins against fewer than 15 losses.
Today, Dave owns the St. George Tennis Academy where he trains over 150 junior players and some 50 adults. During his 30 years, Dave has taught over 3000 players including over 100 state, national and/or world-ranked players.
In addition to the many articles published here at TennisONE, Dave has published over 60 tennis articles in magazines such as USPTA's ADDvantage Magazine and the Netherland's "Tennis & Coach" magazine. In 2004, Dave published his first book, TENNIS MASTERY, considered by many to be one of the top five tennis books ever written. Dave's book and Academy information can be found at www.tennismastery.net.
Dave currently is a Wilson Speaker's Bureau and Advisory Staff member. He has spoken at divisional and world USPTA conventions. His 15-year study of the two-handed forehand has drawn much interest in the tennis-teaching community. Dave is also a board member of the Intermountain USPTA Division.
