Our philosophy is that tennis is lots of fun, and our camp is all about
giving kids the opportunity to have fun. Many of the kids coming here have
had negative experiences at other camps where there's too much emphasis
on competition and winning. We have plenty of opportunities to compete here,
in all kinds of tournaments at all different levels, but it's all done within
a framework of learning sportsmanship and having fun.
Tennis is an individual sport, and it can be lonely out there on the court
if you are just playing as an individual. That's why at the beginning of
camp we put kids into a group of six, with a camp counselor assigned to
each group. Many of our lessons are group lessons, and the kids really enjoy
the camaraderie that comes from working together as a group or team. At
the end of camp, one member of each group receives a sportsmanship award,
and that plaque is the same size as the one given to a kid who wins a camp
tournament.
Another thing that distinguishes Carmel Valley is our outstanding group
of tennis teachers - who are also the camp counselors. All of our counselors
are college players or former college players, including Bob Wallace, our
Tennis Director. Besides being outstanding tennis players and teachers,
they also are outstanding individuals who act as role models for the kids
on and off the court.
With this type of staff, we teach tennis as a vehicle for learning to play
the game instinctively, giving them the confidence to go for their shots.
We believe that kids already know a lot about what they like and what they're
confident in. If they've played tennis before, we ask them at the beginning
of camp, "What's your favorite shot?" We encourage them to focus
on what they like to do best, knowing that by building on their strengths,
they'll be more eager to tackle the other, more difficult parts of their
game. At the end of camp, we give a plaque to each of our campers for the
thing he or she does best.
So, yes, the Carmel Valley Tennis Camp is about learning to play tennis-and
lots of it. But it's also about making friends. It's about doing all kinds
of social and sporting activities. It's about learning how to have fun while
you're competing. Most importantly, it's about developing the self-confidence
to take their game and their lives to a new level.
