Error #1: Moving Too Early on Your Partner's Serve

Serving into the deuce court, the server wants to create a volleying opportunity for his net partner. But when should the net partner move? The correct play is for the net player to begin moving just after the ball bounces (see Brian Garrow's lesson). Any earlier and the receiver will clearly see the alley open and generally play the return behind the net player.

Below is the photographic sequence of what we've just diagrammed. I have just served. You can see the ball directly above the net, and at the same moment my partner has begun to cross. The receiver will have ample opportunity to play the ball down my partner's alley. The only question is whether my partner will be contrite after the point or suggest that I was slow to cover his alley. Stay tuned.
