Handling problems off the court are sometimes more difficult than handling those on the court. Have a problem? Send them to: lifeatnet.tennisone.com

Question

Dear Life at the Net,

I am a public court player, and I often have a problem with other players not setting the clock that is provided. The posted rules indicate that a players who do not set the clock must forfeit the courts. However, anyone attempting to enforce this rule knows the ugliness that can result. Please help me.

Black Eye in Sunnyvale

Dear Black Eye in Sunnyvale,

Well, this is not unlike many "public" situations, whether you're out on a public court or out on the public highways. You can't control other people's rude or obnoxious behavior---you can only control your own reaction and do what is within the bounds of civilized behavior. One civilized solution to your problem is to ask the players (in a pleasant way) hogging the court if you can set the clocks for them. This has worked for us and the players have complied with the remaining duration of time. Another civilized approach, although less timely (but perhaps more satisfying in the long run) is to file a compliant with the recreation department overeseeing the courts and see if you can get some resolution from them. Ultimately, unless you really want to run all the legal and personal risks that your "black eye" solution suggests, you must might have to let this one go. It's not up to you to make everyone behave the way you should. If the problem won't go away, maybe it would be better to find another place to play where there is less aggravation. Life is too short to spend too much time on things like this.
