12. One-handed Forehand

A lot of "little ones" will need to use two hands to get their racquet heads through the hitting zone. As they get strong enough to handle the racquet more comfortably, I prefer to switch them to one hand as soon as possible. Besides the flexibility of hitting with one hand, the left hand can now be used as a source of balance. Splitting the hands as soon as the ball is seen to be a forehand leads to early racquet preparation, good balance and an opportunity to have a good extended follow through.

Make sure that the emphasis of the follow through is to extend the strings out towards the net or the teacher as long as possible. Too often emphasis on a long follow through is misplaced in wrapping the racket up and around the shoulders. The whole key is to have strings in the hitting zone for as long as possible.
