4. Height and Depth

The defensive lob requires height and depth. The angle of the racquet face is consistent with the intention of this shot. Note: this is not a backspin shot, nor is it a topspin shot, but simply a ball hit with an open face and an upward swing. The defensive lob does not require heavy topspin as we don't intend to try and hit a winner, just get back into the point. An interesting practice exercise is to time the flight of your defensive lob, and to see whether you can keep the ball in the air for at least two seconds. Remember, when the ball is in the air for two seconds, those are the same two seconds you have available for a full and complete recovery.
