The Straight Back Forehand

by Monty Basnyat

Movement/Swing Elements

  • For balls that barely clear the net or are hit with underspin, use a straight racquet take-back rather than the loopy take-back.
  • Take the racquet head at about waist level.
  • The fundamentals are the same as executing the loopy forehand--balanced footwork, good shoulder coil and bent knees. The only difference is you are eliminating the loop on the backswing. This, in turn, will eliminate many of your mishits, as you no longer need the split-second reaction and timing to quickly drop your racquet head from a very high position to hit these low balls.

The first animation sequence will scan in slowly. Subsequent sequences will be in slow motion and keep repeating. To stop the endless loop, click on the "Back" button or option on your browser and go back to your previous page.

Note: If you can't see the animation above, your browser doesn't support it (most browsers, including Netscape and Explorer do).
