Catch a Ball to Hit a Volley

Dan Leon
Wimbledon Woods Racquet Club

Because they've learned to hit groundstrokes by taking the racket back, many beginning players think they have to take the racquet back to generate power on their volleys. When you're volleying, you don't have time to take the racquet back. To correct this, I toss them a ball and say, "Catch." When you catch a ball, you don't take your arm back and then reach forward to catch the ball. You simply move your arm and hand forward and catch it. Do the same when hitting your volley.
