Rule of the Week (1/15/97)

"What can't you touch?"

Every week TennisONE will respond to a frequently asked question about the rules of tennis.

Rule of the Week Question

My opponent hit a drop shot. I got to it and hit what I thought was a winner although I touched the net post as I was trying to stop my momentum. Is this the same as touching the net and should I have lost the point?

Answer

Yes, you should have lost the point. If you, your racquet or clothes touch the net, net post, singles sticks, net straps or the ground within your opponent's court, at any time that the ball is still in play, you lose the point.
