Every week TennisONE will respond to a frequently asked question about the rules of tennis.

Rule of the Week Question

Are different types of tennis balls allowed, and if so, what's the difference?

Answer

Yes, different types of balls are allowed depending on what altitude you're playing at. Under 4,000 feet, you have to play with a ball that bounds between 53-58 inches when dropped 100 inches upon a concrete base. Above 4,000 feet, you can play with two types of balls:

1. Pressurized ball--shall bound between 48-53 inches (under similar conditiions as above) and has a greater internal pressure than external pressure.

2. Zero-pressure ball--shall bound between 53-58 inches and shall have an internal pressure that is approximately equal to the external pressure and have been acclimatized for 60 as or more at the altitude of the specific tournament.
