Rule of the Week (12/2/96)

"Changing mind on racquet spin"

Every week TennisONE will respond to a frequently asked question about the rules of tennis.

Rule of the Week Question

This is kind of a weird one I doubt will ever come up again, but maybe you can help me with the answer anyway. My partner and I were playing in a doubles tournament late one afternoon, spun the racquet and lost the toss. Our opponents elected to serve and we chose the side of the court we wanted to begin on. During the war-ups it began to rain and the match ended up getting postponed until the next morning. When we got ready to start the next morning our opponents said they now wanted to receive. We assented as it didn't seem to make a big difference to us. Could you give us a ruling on this one?

Answer

As long as a point had not been played they were allowed to change their selection. The choice is normally irrevocable unless the match is suspended before a point is played.
