Rule of the Week (2/15/97)

"Can you cross the net to inspect ball marks?"

Every week TennisONE will respond to a frequently asked question about the rules of tennis.

Rule of the Week Question

I recently played in a tournament in which my obnoxious opponent continuously came over onto my side of the court in between points to inspect ball marks to make sure I had made the right call. I told him he was not allowed to do this. He contended that he could do anything he wanted as long as it did not violate the time limit in between points. Who was right?

Answer

You were. A player may not pass the net to inspect a ball mark.
