Rule of the Week (2/15/98)

"When is a double hit legal?"

Every week TennisONE will respond to a frequently asked question about the rules of tennis.

Rule of the Week Question

The other day my opponent hit the ball twice. Is that legal?

Answer

It depends. If done deliberately, it's not legal. If it's not done deliberately, it's perfectly ok. Of course "deliberateness" is a tricky issue to resolve. As in all things, the person doing the double hit should readily admit if it was deliberate.
