Rule of the Week (3/1/97)

"Can two players hit a ball?"

Every week TennisONE will respond to a frequently asked question about the rules of tennis.

Rule of the Week Question

In a doubles match, our opponents both went for a ball and both hit it simultaneously. Can they do this? And if only one can hit it, who makes the call whether one or both hit it?

Answer

No, they can't both hit the ball. Only one member of a doubles team may hit the ball. Your team makes the call, and in this case, you should have said: "You both hit it, but you only lose one point."
