Rule of the Week (4/1/98)

"When are you ready to receive serve?"

Every week TennisONE will respond to a frequently asked question about the rules of tennis.

Rule of the Week Question

I played an opponent the other day who constantly quick-served me. On a few key points, I really wasn't ready but played the ball anyways. Can I ask for a let or replay after this type of incident?

Answer

No, you can't. If you make an attempt to return the serve, you're presumed to be ready to receive it. This rule is intended to prevent players from hitting a return out and then using the excuse that he or she wasn't ready. If you feel you are being rushed by the server, hold up your hand and loudly interrupt the service motion, making no attempt to play the ball if the server continues with the serve.
