Every week TennisONE will respond to a frequently asked
question about the rules of tennis.
We have a player at our club who objects whenever the receiving
partner calls a ball out on the side of the court. Does he have a right
to object?
Well, this is a delicate issue. Normally, the receiver's partner makes the calls for the service line, and the receiver makes the call on the center and side lines. Yet the rules say either partner "may have the call on any ball he clearly sees out." We would guess that the player at your club feels that the receiver's partner can never clearly see an out ball on the side line. We think he's wrong about that, and he's clearly wrong to challenge every out call by the receiver's partner.
