Rule of the Week (8/15/97)

"Let serve or lose the point?"

Every week TennisONE will respond to a frequently asked question about the rules of tennis.

Rule of the Week Question

We were playing doubles. Our opponent's serve hit the net and on the fly hits my partner, who was receiving serve. Do we lose the point?

Answer

No. Since the ball hit the net and went over, it is played as a "let" regardless of whether it lands in the court or hits your partner. However, if the ball had not hit the net, you would have lost the point. As a general rule, anytime your opponent's ball touches any part of you or what you are wearing, you lose the point.
