Q: When should my child start tennis lessons?

Our whole approach to introducing kids to tennis is based on our view that kids are individuals. Every kid is different, with different mental and physical maturity, so you can't set an absolute age when they're ready to start playing tennis. There are kids at four or five years old who want to play and can really whack a ball with a pee wee racquet. For them, tiny tots tennis is a good idea. In general, however, we think that eight or nine is a good age to introduce your child to tennis. At that age, they're mature enough to understand the game and strong enough to start hitting the ball over the net with some success. If you start a kid in tennis before he or she is ready - before they can have some success - you risk turning them off from the sport forever.
