3. Approaching the Service Line

 

After you've hit your approach shot, don't run into the net with your hands and racquet head down by your sides. Approaching this way cuts down on your preparation time for that first volley, as you must bring your racquet up into volley position. Come to the net with your racquet head up, ready to hit your first volley - particularly if it comes back to you more quickly than you might like. You should also approach with your head up, looking to see how your opponent is reacting to your approach shot and looking to see when he/she is setting up so you can time your split-step properly.
