3. Drop and Hit
Once I've seen that their feel for the ball will allow it, I can then
move on to more traditional tennis striking. I prefer to start Pee Wees
with two hands and a sideways closed stance. It's not that these won't be
changed as they get older but it provides them with a greater chance for
success at this stage. Remember: more success = more confidence
= having more fun. Usually in the beginning after starting them
in the hitting position, I'll drop the ball and they hit. Again include
games such as spelling out their name, going through the alphabet or who
can reach 20 first. They get a letter or a point for every ball succesfully
hit over the net.
