1. Faulty Positioning
c. "Up" Volley Gives the Opponent all the Options
My struggle at the service line has created a tantalizing floater for
my opponent (who is now in the foreground of the pictures below). That's
not the only problem it has created. Again, you can see me in the background
of the pictures below, just having crossed in front of my partner and just
after hitting up on the volley. Basically, I haven't done enough with my
shot and therefore have left my partner out of position. He is left trying
to scramble to my side of the court to fill the gaping hole I have created.
My hope is he will be able to help me out of this jam, but the reality of
the situation is that I should have done more with my volley when I poached.
My floater is now in my opponent's strike zone. He can either play an angled
volley into the open court, or he can add insult to injury by actually trying
to hit me with his shot. My partner might argue that I deserve this indignity.
Clearly, my opponent now has all the options. He has the correct positioning,
and we are, for all practical purposes, doomed. Our only chance is for a
ball to roll across from the other court so we can play two.
