1. Position

Normally, the volleyer should position himself exactly in front of the receiver. In the foreground of the picture below, I'm in just that position - about the middle of the service box. Movement for the net player is the key, and from this starting position I have to be able to move quickly to my left to cover the alley, or quickly to my right to intercept the return of serve. Ideally, the serve should be placed down the middle. In this case, the serve is going down the middle towards the backhand of my right-handed opponent. From this position, the returner does not have a favorable angle to hit down my alley.
